“Joe Sing to The Gods” deserves 5 stars and more; suitable words to sum it up, how about Amazing, Astounding, Compelling, Captivating, Dazzling, Fantastic, Stunning - yes I loved it!
It is without doubt over 90 minutes of pure entertainment and musical excellence from a man who truly deserves and has earned the right to be called a genius.
The ancient Kourion amphitheatre required a very high calibre performer and Joe more than rose to the challenge for me with a selection of songs new and old which he has firmly put his stamp on and made his own. I would not want to pick one particular song out as Joe sang his heart out on each and every one and for me really did give a performance fit for the gods, including the most amazing vocal impressions,
close your eyes and you think you really are listening to the likes of Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Sinatra, Manilow, Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland; this man is that good.
Joe and his audience are always as one and the warmth, love and respect the audience have for him comes over in abundance. A rousing rock and roll medley at the piano together with spectacular versions of “Georgia” and “Wind Beneath My Wings” are testament to the fact that Joe is an incredibly gifted, versatile, polished, professional and accomplished performer.
The concert ended with an wonderful rendition of “If I Never Sing another Song”, the poignant Don Black song originally performed by the late great Matt Monro but surely a song which only Joe can give true justice to, taking into account the events in his life over the last 20 years or so.
Summing up, I think this DVD stands alongside “Blackpool 93”, “With Love”,
“Joe’s Back”, “Live In Paradise” and “Palladium 2006” as a classic Longthorne performance.
It is heart warming to watch this concert and see Joe back at his best, you are left in no doubt as to how much this performance meant to him. “Joe Sings to the Gods” is a highly polished, professional, delightfully filmed production from Vegas with some interesting extra features showing rehearsals and the build up to the concert. I would like to recommend it to all fans and followers of good music and quality entertainment be they longstanding fans like myself or someone new to Joe.
